Yorkshire has 93 dangerous wild animals, including a crocodile, being kept
as pets, according to the Born Free Foundation (BFF).
The international wildlife charity has revealed the figure as it wants the
government to change the law to stop people from keeping the animals in
“unsuitable environments”.
The BFF asked councils around Yorkshire about which dangerous animals were
registered with them to be kept in private hands, this is the list:
Nine cats including six leopard Cats
10 antelopes
25 ostriches
One crocodile
33 snakes including western diamondback rattlesnakes, monocled cobras
and puff adders
15 bison
Currently, under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act of 1976, anyone in Britain
can keep a dangerous wild animal as long as they obtain a licence from their
local authority.
The licence application requires them to demonstrate that the animals are
properly contained and not at risk of escape.
