Murder investigation launched in Sheffield

A murder inquiry is underway following the death of a 26-year-old man in
Sheffield city centre on Tuesday (24 March).

Emergency services were called to the junction of Union Street and
Charles Street at around 3.30am after a man was found unconscious.

Officers and paramedics attempted resuscitation, but the man sadly died
at the scene.

A post mortem carried out last night found he died from a head injury.

Formal identification has taken place and his family are being supported
by officers at this time.

Detective Chief Inspector Mark Oughton, investigating, said: “Our
enquiries are progressing at speed as we work to establish the
circumstances of this man’s death.

“We believe that prior to his death, the 26-year-old man was involved in
a fight with someone who was known to him, I would like to reassure the
public that there is no wider risk to the community following this
incident.

“My priority at this time is to hear from anyone who might have been in
the Union Street area of the city centre between 1.20am and 1.40am on
Tuesday morning.

“Did you witness a fight between two people, hear a disturbance or
witness anything suspicious?

“If you have any information that might help us, I’d urge you to contact
us immediately as it could be vital to the investigation. You can call
101 quoting incident number 58 of 24 March.
