A group of kind-hearted Doncaster ladies have knitted 150 ‘trauma teddies’
to offer comfort and support to children who have been affected by crime.
The teddy bears aim to calm and distract children who have either been
involved in a road accident of have been a victim of, or witnessed a crime.
The idea came from Margaret Dyson, a member of the United Reform Church in
Intake, who heard about how ‘trauma teddies’ have been used in other police
forces across the country.
PS Donna Roden from the Serious Collision Unit and DCI Joanne Bates from
Doncaster collected the donation of bears that are now available for use by
South Yorkshire Police officers.
The officers said: “We would like to thank the ladies from the United Reform
Church for being so thoughtful and for making these teddies.
“They are a fantastic idea and I’m sure they will help children who we may
come into contact with, who may be frightened or upset.
“They will encourage children to build confidence in the police in a variety
of situations such as at road traffic collisions or if they have been
involved in a traumatic incident.
“All the teddies are now being carried by road policing officers to use as
appropriate at incidents and some teddies have been placed into our witness
interview suites across the force.”
