From bungee slides to breaking down doors, there was a bit of everything
this Tuesday when Operation Duxford was back with a bang in Rotherham.
Enforcement, safeguarding and engagement activity took place across the
district to tackle crime, assist vulnerable people and offer advice, notably
in Ferham, Eastwood, Manvers, Masbrough, Brinsworth and Rotherham town
centre.
During the day, officers made five arrests two for drugs offences, two for
GBH and possession of an offensive weapon, and one for burglary.
Drugs, cash and vehicles were all seized as part of the day of action,
including three vehicles, £4,500 in cash, six cannabis plants, and
quantities of dry cannabis and cocaine.
Chief Inspector Becky Chapman, who led the operation, said: Duxford is all
about police from across the force coming together every month with local
partner agencies to show what we do on a daily basis to tackle crime and
protect people, demonstrating the breadth of work that takes place.

communities, like drug dealing and antisocial behaviour, as well as
providing some fun activities for youngsters and families to give us an
ideal opportunity to speak with local people about their issues.

The day started with an early morning briefing at Main Street Police Station
and a drugs warrant in the Eastwood area, the first of eight warrants
conducted during this Duxford operation.
Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, Rotherham Council and South
Yorkshire Fire & Rescue joined police and PCSOs for a community activity day
at Ferham School involving football, a fire safety demonstration, a bungee
slide, a local litter pick and a popular visit from Police Horses Brinsworth
and Oakwell!
Members of Rotherham Central NHP team also visited over fifty local
residents, businesses and faith organisations in the Ferham area, as well as
signing local people up for SYP Alerts using one of the forces mobile
kiosks.
Elsewhere in the Central area, PC Paul Gray delivered an Internet Safety
talk at Cranworth School in Eastwood to a group of local parents in
conjunction with Rotherham Council, covering topics such as grooming,
sharing nude photos, reporting to CEOP and using parental controls. The
parents really enjoyed the session, saying they felt more able to discuss
internet safety with their children.
Later in the evening, members of staff from the Barnardos charity joined
neighbourhood officers for foot patrols in the Eastwood area, talking to
youngsters and ensuring their safety.
In the north of the district, Chief Constable Stephen Watson and Chief
Inspector Paul Ferguson joined PC Brett Thompson at Waterfront Golf Club in
Wath where staff and pro golfers gave their time teaching local youngsters
from Swinton Comprehensive School how to play the game. And nearby at
Cortonwood Retail Park, members of Rotherham North NHP team spent the day
offering crime prevention advice at a pop-up stall.
Down south, high-visibility antisocial behaviour patrols took place in the
Brinsworth area involving RMBC Youth Services and PCSOs from Rotherham South
NHP, as well as test-purchasing operations at key licensing premises. There
were also crime prevention and water safety events at Rother Valley Country
Park involving South Yorkshire Fire & Rescue, warning of the dangerous
consequences of swimming in open water.
