Barnsley Museums continue their run of showcasing high calibre art with
three new exhibitions opening at the Cooper Gallery.
On Saturday 15 September ‘Artists and Adventurers: Women Who Dared to
Create’ launches at the Cooper Gallery. The exhibition is a unique and
colourful exploration of fine and decorative artworks. Paintings, drawings,
ceramics and glass from the art collections of the Cooper Gallery and Cannon
Hall Museum will be on display.
Evelyn de Morgan, Vanessa Bell, Prunella Clough, Clarice Cliff and Lucie Rie
have work featured as part of the exhibition. They are accompanied by three
of Barnsley’s very own artists Gertrude Spencer Stanhope, Florence Hold and
Madeline Moore. The stories and experiences of these women and the
challenges they faced over the last 150 years are explored, and their
creativity and achievements celebrated. The exhibition runs until Saturday
12 January 2019.
Melissa Gallimore, the exhibition’s curator, said: “It’s been fascinating
researching the women artists who feature in this exhibition. The diverse
nature of their creativity reflects their interesting lives. I would
encourage anyone in Barnsley town centre to pop-in and find out more.”
To bring the theme up to the present day, visitors can also see the
contemporary art show ‘Vote 100 – A Century of Change?’. This exhibit will
be on show in the Sadler Room at the Cooper Gallery from Thursday 25
October. In 1918 the Representation of the People Act extended the vote to
all men over 21, and to some groups of women over 30. Earlier this year
Barnsley Museums invited local women artists to respond to the question ‘In
100 years, how have attitudes changed?’. This unique exhibition which runs
until Wednesday 12 December brings together their response and celebrates
women in the arts.
‘Seascapes and Riverviews’ will also open on Saturday 15 September – a new
long-term exhibition of paintings and drawings from the Cooper Gallery
collection. The show will feature British and European artists including;
Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, Sir David Muirhead Bone, JMW Turner and Johan
Jongkind. Frozen rivers with skaters, busy shipping, atmospheric estuaries
and sunny Italian views will be on display. Stormy works by the celebrated
French marine artist Eugene Isabey, a favourite of Mr and Mrs Cooper, will
also feature.
Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place at Barnsley Council, said:
“We’re delighted to be launching our autumn season with three new
exhibitions at the Cooper Gallery. In Barnsley we’re fortunate to have such
a wonderful collection, helping us to regularly change our exhibits and
allow visitors to view works by world-renowned and regional artists.
“Barnsley Museums have a wonderful reputation for holding exciting and
unique exhibitions, and these fascinating exhibitions will be no different.”
Artists and Adventurers: Women Who Dared to Create and Vote 100 – A Century
of Change? have generously been supported by Arts Council England.
Admission to the Cooper Gallery and the three new exhibitions is free. Visit

Activities include family craft workshops, the launch of a new ‘Mothers Who
Make’ group and an evening of poetry with Helen Mort.
