Barnsley College and Premdor, one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of
timber doors in Barnsley, have launched the Premdor Academy providing local
young people with the opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge
within engineering and manufacturing and address the skills shortage.
The new Premdor Academy is based at Barnsley College’s Science, Technology,
Engineering and Maths (STEM) Centre on Old Mill Lane. Students will study
engineering and manufacturing courses which have been specifically designed
by both Barnsley College and Premdor in order to meet the business needs of
Premdor. The aim of the Academy is to attract young people from the local
area and develop their knowledge and experience in order to prepare them for
a successful career with Premdor.
Students can study a range of Level 1 and Level 2 courses and will be taught
by the College’s expert tutors. Staff from Barnsley-based Premdor will
actively be involved with the Academy by providing industry talks, regularly
assessing students and ensuring that they are equipped with the necessary
skills to prepare them for employment after they finish their course.
The Premdor Academy will provide a solid foundation for students in
engineering and manufacturing, offering them with an opportunity at the end
of their course which could lead to employment with Premdor.
Gavin Day, UK Organisational Development Manager at Premdor, said: “We are
really passionate about being a local employer of choice, developing both
existing and future employees helps us to achieve this. The Premdor Academy
will therefore open doors to great opportunities for people in the Borough
of Barnsley as well as securing our long term future as the market leader
within our industry.”
Chris Clifford, Head of Engineering at Barnsley College, added: “We are
looking forward to working with Premdor in this exciting new venture.
Academies are a fantastic way of bringing education and industry together
and the Premdor Academy will ensure that our students are leaving College
with the correct skills and knowledge required by the engineering industry.”
