A 47-year-old man has today (Monday 5 November) admitted to killing his
partner at their home in Sheffield just before Christmas last year.

Philip French (pictured right) was due to stand trial for the murder of
Jayne Lewis, but entered a guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of
diminished responsibility at Sheffield Crown Court earlier today.

On Thursday 21 December 2017, police attended a flat where French lived
with Miss Lewis (pictured below), in Hazlebarrow Crescent, after
concerns were raised by neighbours who reported a disturbance.

On arrival, officers found Miss Lewis’ body and also French, who told
officers he had killed his partner.

French was arrested and taken to hospital to be treated for self-harm
injuries, he was later charged with murder and remanded into custody and
subsequently transferred to secure hospital where he has undergone
extensive medical assessment. He has now been deemed fit to plea at
court.

Jayne’s family have released a picture of Jayne and the following short
statement: “On behalf of Jayne, we would like to thank all who knew her
for their love and continued support of her.”

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Handley, the Senior Investigating
Officer, explains: “This has understandably been an incredibly sensitive
investigation that has been extremely difficult for Miss Lewis’ family
and friends and first and foremost I’d like to extend my condolences to
them.

“Sadly, Miss Lewis was found deceased at her home address when emergency
services arrived. French has admitted to causing the fatal injuries to
Miss Lewis. A post-mortem examination established that she died as a
result of compression to her neck, she also had a number of stab
injuries caused by a screwdriver.

“French’s actions on that day have left her loved ones utterly
devastated. Miss Lewis’ daughter in particular has been left deeply
affected by the death of her mother and while French’s guilty plea today
will never bring her back, I hope that her family can take some comfort
in French admitting to what he did.”

French has been sentenced to a hospital order with restrictions, to be
treated in a secure hospital.
