After 24 hours of drama, Graham Brady’s amendment calling for the
backstop to be replaced has been approved by the Commons by 317 to 301.
Majority of 16.
It is a fair majority of MPs on an amendment which expresses conditional
approval for a deal, providing legally binding changes are made to the
backstop.
The EU’s photocopiers are already going into overdrive recycling old
statements about the deal being non-negotiable, the reality is that they
cannot ignore this vote. MPs have given May a powerful mandate, it’s
time she used it and stood up to the EU.
On another note, a recent warning released by Lord Bew of Donegore
cannot be ignored.
The Irish Backstop would “turn the Good Friday Agreement on its head”,
says a Policy Exchange Briefing Note by Lord Bew of Donegore, a
Crossbench peer and leading historian of Ireland.
Lord Bew writes that the “UK Government has allowed the Irish Government
to weaponise the 1998 Good Friday Agreement in a way that prevents
compromise on the Backstop”.
But he offers a way forward for the UK Government that, he argues, could
“transform the terms of the debate around the Withdrawal Agreement” by
making the Backstop temporary in “explicit and legally binding terms”.
Who knows which way the wind will blow as EU dogma still dismisses any
changes being on the table. It now remains to be seen whether or not PM
Teresa May makes any progress against the European brick wall as she
travels to re-negotiate terms from yesterdays vote.
Interesting times lie ahead, it could indeed be a catastrophe for Mrs
May as she makes for a better deal against all odds.
