The Sublime Symmetry exhibition which showcases the work of William De Morgan, the celebrated Victorian Arts and Crafts designer will be arriving at Cannon hall on Saturday 11 June.
The free exhibition, which runs until Sunday 4 September, presents over 80 magnificent works, including ceramics from the De Morgan Collection and designs on paper on loan from the V&A. The pieces have all been chosen to demonstrate the mathematical concepts which are the basis for De Morgan’s beautiful and colourful ceramic designs.
Children and whole families will be able to explore the patterns, shapes and symmetry in De Morgan’s elaborately decorated tiles and pots. Making learning maths fun, there will be interactive games and a family trail that can be enjoyed by budding mathematicians young and old. The exhibition is supported by an exciting schools programme and teacher information pack aimed at Key Stage 2.
Professor Alexandre Borovik, Professor of Mathematics at Manchester University hailed the exhibition ‘proof that curating is an art form on its own’.
Sue Thiedeman, Head of Culture and Visitor Economy at Barnsley Council said: “We are thrilled to be hosting the latest De Morgan exhibition. As well as being visual stunning and educational, it also sits perfectly with our permanent De Morgan exhibition, ‘A family of artists’. The Hall has strong connections with the artistic family, which visitors will discover more about.”
The De Morgan Foundation is grateful to the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund, the London Mathematical Society and The Art Fund: Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Grant, who have made the touring exhibition possible with their generous support.
