Hands up, who thought England would make the quarter finals of the World
Cup? Ok, a few of you but did you think we’d be facing Sweden?
That’s the challenge standing in the way of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions
for a place in next week’s semi finals, and the countdown starts today with
the two huge games as Uruguay play France before Brazil take on Belgium.
It’s going to be a busy few days in pubs and bars across South Yorkshire and
we want everyone to have a great time, wherever, however and with whoever
you’re planning to watch the games.

Chief Superintendent Shaun Morley, the officer leading the force’s World Cup
operation, said: “It’s been an incredible tournament so far and the vast
majority of people have behaved superbly, really getting into the games,
enjoying time with friends, and experiencing the usual rollercoaster of
emotions with England!
“Of course, as England progress, the excitement naturally builds and people
can get a bit carried away when having a few drinks. Don’t be surprised to
see officers working in key locations across the county. They’re on hand to
keep you safe and to deal quickly with anyone intent on spoiling the party
atmosphere.
“Before, during and after the match against Sweden, irrespective of the
result on the pitch, please plan your day and your journey home, respect
your environment and remember that not everyone is a football fan. Have fun,
enjoy a drink or two but know your limit and don’t let alcohol ruin your
judgment.
“Enjoy the match, fingers crossed for another England victory, preferably
without penalties, and if you see our officers out and about, make sure to
say hello and share your photos with us. It’s been really hot work recently
and I know that your kindness and good nature is really appreciated.”
