Important historic records relating to the former Hoylandswaine Urban
District Council have been carefully sorted, preserved and catalogued by
Barnsley Archives and Local Studies team.

The new records will be showcased for the very first time at a special
event on Wednesday, 17 October. The event, which will be held in
Hoylandswaine Village Hall between 10am and 1pm, will allow people to
see the fascinating documents for the very first time. They include rate
books (lists of residents who paid a rate to the council), plans for new
buildings, a census of children in the district from 1877 and various
posters.

The surviving records provide a unique insight into the rural nature of
the Hoylandswaine district, which reached out from the centre of the
village as far as Cat Hill, Wellhouse Lane near Penistone and Hill Top.
The oldest records in the collection detailing local government date
back to 1847 and move through to the formation of Hoylandswaine Local
Board in 1869, the change to Hoylandswaine Urban District Council in
1896 and finally to its merger with Penistone Urban District Council in
1938. The area became part of Barnsley Council in 1974.

Cllr Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “Our previous
Archives on Tour events were hugely successful and provided residents
with a unique opportunity to see historic documents up close. On
Wednesday 17 October residents with an interest in local history will
once again be able to study a selection of unique documents and discover
what village life was like during the 19th and 20th centuries.

“For anyone unable to attend the event, the newly catalogued collection
can be found in the Experience Barnsley Discovery Centre located in the
Town Hall. Open Monday to Friday, with late night opening on Tuesday
it’s the perfect place for anyone looking to uncover their family
history and explore the Barnsley Film and Sound Archive.”
