On Friday 8 March, a number of professional attendees and partners were
invited to the ‘Speak Up’ domestic abuse conference to listen to
discussions around the effects unhealthy relationships can have on
individuals and families.

There were presentations from service users, survivors and professionals
to highlight their personal experiences of domestic abuse and the impact
it has had on lives.

Discussions from IDAS (Independent Domestic Abuse Services), Berneslai
Homes, Inspire to Change, and Barnsley Council were held to raise
awareness around the various activities that are ongoing within the
borough that tackle the issue of unhealthy relationships.

This event aimed to highlight the effect of domestic abuse helping GP’s,
healthcare professionals and schools support residents in the wider
community. By providing them with the tools to recognise the signs of
domestic abuse in a relationship, victims will be able to find the early
support that they need from their local services.

The conference was a great success, highlighting how unhealthy
relationships can affect families in a variety of ways, and how services
can support the victims allowing them to move forward and reduce the
impact of domestic abuse.

Cllr Jenny Platts, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities, said; “The
Speak Up conference was a great demonstration of why our services are so
important for the residents of Barnsley. We need to carry on educating
people on the impact of domestic abuse and the effect it can have on all
of those involved. If you have any concerns about your relationship or a
family member, contact IDAS on 03000 110 110″.

This news is linked to Town Spirit, our new way of working better
together. We believe, that if everyone in Barnsley does just one thing,
we can make our borough a more welcoming place to live, work, invest and
visit.
