Houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) will need licences from Monday, 1st
October 2018, Rotherham Borough Council has reminded landlords.
It follows a Government decision earlier this year on rented properties
occupied by five or more people regardless of the number of storeys.
HMOs have become increasingly popular in the borough and landlords have
until April to apply for their licence.
It costs £824 for five years and landlords flouting the new rules will
face prosecution and fines of up to £30,000.
Cllr Dominic Beck, cabinet member for housing, said: This new change in the
law reflects the importance society is putting on the safety of rented
housing.
Visit rotherham.gov.uk/landlordlicensing for more information. Properties
included in a selective licensing area will not need to apply and will be
transferred for free in 2020.
