Leader of House of Commons Andrea Leadsom has announced that half-year
breaks of MP’s in February will be cancelled in order to have more time
to promote Brexit’s legislation.
Andrea Leadsom, head of Commons, announced on Thursday that the holiday
that would take place February 14 to February 25 probably will not
happen.
Speaking to deputies, Leadsom said this is likely to happen because of
the “unique” circumstances the country finds in it.
“I understand this is a brief note for colleagues and staff of the
House, but I think our constituents will expect the House to be able to
continue making progress at this important time,” she said.
It comes when Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt admitted that Brexit may
have to be postponed beyond March 29 to give the parliament “extra time
to pass critical legislation.”
Leadsom, who is responsible for getting government business through
Commons, last week said Britain might need “a few extra weeks”.
Theresa May has announced that she intends to return to Brussels to try
and reopen negotiations over the controversial disputes of Northern
Ireland.
But EU leaders have rejected the suggestion that the withdrawal
agreement signed in December may be amended.
Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, said: “The EU
position is clear and consistent. The withdrawal agreement is not open
to renegotiation.”
May will have to report to parliament for her negotiations with the EU
on 13 February, with a subsequent vote by MPs expected the next day.
Reports have suggested that it may face a wave of resignation from the
Remain ministers if it does not end a Brexit no-deal outcome.
Greg Clark, business secretary, who is seen, is more likely to leave the
government ranks, said last night that he would do “all I can” to
prevent no-deal Brexit.
“I’ve always been very clear that leaving in such a mess on March 29
would be very bad for everyone in the economy,” he said.
