A Rotherham man, who was arrested as part of a proactive drugs operation in
the Eastwood area tackling organised crime, is now serving half-a-decade
behind bars.
Omar Ali was arrested on Wednesday 24 January as he tried to leave a
property in Hatherley Road, as officers approached to carry out a warrant
under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
A search of the house, where Ali was living at the time, found quantities of
Class A drugs hidden behind picture frames and in other areas of the house.
Ali was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to
supply Class A drugs.
The 25-year-old, of Selwyn Street, Rotherham, appeared before Sheffield
Crown Court on Wednesday 11 July in relation to the offences and entered
guilty pleas to two counts of possession with intent to supply heroin and
crack cocaine.
He was jailed for a total of five years and will be made subject to a
Serious Crime Prevention Order on his release for five years. This means Ali
will be subject to certain restrictions upon release, including the
restriction of use and possession of communication devices. Breach of the
order is a criminal offence.
PC Barry Biondi, investigating, said: “The warrant, carried out as a result
of intelligence gathered in relation to the possession and distribution of
drugs within the area, resulted in the seizure of a quantity of heroin and
crack cocaine.
“I’m pleased that we’ve been able to remove these drugs from the streets of
Eastwood. Tackling the supply and distribution of drugs within our
communities is a priority for us and we are regularly carrying out proactive
operations to identify those involved in this type of criminality so we can
bring them before the courts.
“If you ever have any concerns about the use of drugs within the area you
live, please call us on 101 or speak to your local officers as you see us
out and about.
“Information can also be passed to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800
555111.”
