Police have thanked communities across South Yorkshire for their
co-operation over the weekend, which saw an increase in calls to the
force relating to fireworks and antisocial behaviour.
The number of calls was typical for a busy weekend full of lots of
different events and bonfire celebrations, and thankfully, the weekend
passed without any major incidents. This is thanks to the commitment of
our officers, our partnership working with local agencies, community
groups, businesses and residents.
Across the weekend, Bonfire Night (5 November) saw the most calls with a
25 per cent increase to 999 and 10 per cent increase to 101 compared to
a normal Monday in October.
Chief Superintendent Stuart Barton said: “We are pleased that across
South Yorkshire there were no major incidents.
“However there were some incidences throughout last night, where our
officers and staff from the ambulance and fire services were attacked
with fireworks in Tinsley and Darnall, restricting the service they
could provide to any victims of crime.
“This behaviour is absolutely not acceptable. There were many people who
had a great night last night, with some excellent organised events, but
sadly, some people displayed disgraceful actions exhibited by reckless
and mindless behaviour. We have extra patrols out in these areas this
morning as reassurance for local residents.
“Attacks on the emergency services affect the whole of the community. It
takes away valuable resources from real emergencies, can slow down
response times and puts people, maybe people you know and love, at
risk.”
