Barnsley town centre incident – Saturday 8 September
UPDATE: Incident in Barnsley town centre

A 28 year old woman arrested this morning on suspicion of attempted murder
remains in police custody. The woman is currently being assessed from a
mental health perspective.
Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber said: “As the investigation has
continued to develop at pace throughout the day and continues to be led by
South Yorkshire Police major investigation team as is normal for a serious
offence such as this.
“High visibility patrols will remain in place throughout today to offer
reassurance but Barnsley town centre remains open for business.
“I’d like to thank the public for their patience and reiterate the need for
anyone who was in Barnsley town centre this morning and may have witnessed
the incident to call 101 quoting incident number 246 of 8 September 2018.”

Barnsley investigation – woman remains in custody
Officers can confirm that one woman has been arrested and remains in police
custody following reports of a stabbing in Barnsley town centre this morning
(Saturday 8 September).
Police received numerous calls from around 8.20am reporting a woman was in
possession of a knife in the town centre.
One man suffered minor injuries. No other injuries have been reported at
this time.
Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber said: “We understand that this
morning’s incident will have been distressing and shocking for those in the
town centre and wider Barnsley communities – rest assured we are working
relentlessly to piece together what happened.
“A kitchen knife has been recovered by officers and is being forensically
examined.
“At this stage, we are keeping an open mind as to the motivation. The
investigation is being led by South Yorkshire Police but we are receiving
support from detectives at Counter Terrorism Policing North East. It is not
appropriate to speculate further.
“I’d urge anyone who witnessed this morning’s incident to get in touch with
officers – if you hold any footage of the incident, we’d be really keen to
speak with you as well.
“We’re in discussions with Barnsley Football Club ahead of this afternoon’s
match – home and away fans are advised that there will be a police presence
at the game and around the stadium to provide reassurance.
“I’d ask that the public continue to be vigilant and if you see anything
that distresses you, or causes you concern, please report it to officers
either in person or by calling 101. If a crime is in progress or a life is
at risk, call 999 immediately.”
There will continue to be a high visibility policing presence in the town
centre as the investigation continues. Anyone with information is asked to
call 101 quoting incident number 246 of 8 September 2018.

Police were called at around 8.20am this morning (Saturday 8 September)
following reports that a man had been stabbed in Barnsley town centre.
Police then received numerous further reports of an individual in the town
centre with a knife.
One person has been arrested in connection with the incident and is in
police custody.
One man suffered minor injuries. No other injuries have been reported at
this time.
There are several scenes in place and a high visibility police presence in
Barnsley town centre, while initial enquiries take place to understand the
circumstances surrounding this morning’s incident.
An investigation is now underway and in its early stages to establish
whether this is an isolated incident and whether the individual acted alone.
The public are asked to be vigilant and report any suspicious activity by
calling 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress or a life is at risk. Anyone
who witnessed the incident is asked to call 101 quoting incident number 246
of 8 September 2018.
