Second referendum campaigners are still in denial about three basic
facts – firstly there isn’t a majority in Parliament for a second
referendum, as significant numbers of Labour MPs will oppose one, (More
than a dozen Labour frontbenchers have been to see the chief whip, Nick
Brown, to issue a warning about the scale of opposition to the idea of a
second Brexit referendum.

The shadow housing minister, Melanie Onn, and the shadow justice
minister, Gloria De Piero, both of whom represent constituencies that
voted leave in 2016, were among a delegation who went to urge Brown not
to whip Labour MPs to back a “people’s vote”.)

Secondly there isn’t a majority for a second referendum in the country,
as Britian’s leading pollster John Curtice exposed yesterday. He wrote,
Given the difficulty that MPs seem to be having making a decision about
Brexit, it is perhaps not surprising that there is considerable
discussion of the idea that the issue should be put back in the hands of
voters.

But the idea of a so-called “People’s Vote” has also become a major
talking point thanks to a skillfully conducted campaign that has been
intent on creating the impression that there is popular support for such
a ballot by commissioning polling that appears to show that is the case.
However this impression is misleading. True many a poll does suggest
that more are in favour of another ballot than are against. However,
there are also plenty of polls that show the very opposite!

Thirdly, sending Tony Blair out as their spokesman on the slopes of
Davos is probably not going to change the first two facts in their
favoue.
