The starting line is nearly in sight for steel-spirited fundraisers as they
prepare to run for a hospital charity.
Staff from and friends of the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust will tackle the
Run for All Sheffield 10K on September 23, raising cash for the Rotherham
Hospital and Community Charitys Purple Butterfly Appeal.
But the team is seeking three more members to take on Sheffields infamous
seven hills.
The charitys fundraising team currently includes Penny Fisher, Paul
Broughton, Lisa Tuck, Joanne Clough, Vicky Whitfield, Carl Roebuck and
Angela Lalley.
Carl Roebuck (41), from Swinton, said: My four-year-old son Leo was treated
on the Childrens Ward at Rotherham Hospital recently, after suffering from
a serious infection.
It was a harrowing time for my wife and I but he was so well cared for.
I also have a family member currently undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma,
so this is my way of giving something back to the hospital.
He added: Im really looking forward to taking part in the Sheffield 10K. I
know it will be a great atmosphere.
Im a keen runner and like to run a few times a week, including in the Peak
District.
Hopefully, that will help me cope with the runs infamous hills.
The race route begins at Arundel Gate and takes runners on a journey along
Charter Row and along Ecclesall Road, before skirting the edges of Endcliffe
Park.
It continues along Riverdale Road and Endcliffe Vale Road, then travels down
Brocco Bank and back to the city centre for the finish.
Barry Mellor, chair of the charitable funds committee, said: Earlier this
year, we appealed for people to take part and were delighted with the
response, particularly as its only our second year entering a team.
He added: The Purple Butterfly Appeal is going from strength to strength,
so its an exciting time to join our fundraising team.
The team hopes to raise more than £2,000 for the appeal.

- wathupondearne Latest news in Yorkshire: January 24, 2019 11:28:24 AM Scotland’s former First Minister Alex Salmond has been arrested by police and charged, with a report sent to the procurator fiscal. He is due to appear in court in Edinburgh later today. Sky News are reporting that proceedings are now live under the Contempt of Court Act. Police did not say what Salmond, who served as first minister from 2007 to 2014, is charged with. Two people have made harassment complaints against the SNP grandee but he denies them and took successful legal action against the Scottish government over their investigation. Earlier this month a court said the government’s decisions were “procedurally unfair and… tainted with apparent bias”. At the time Salmond said he is “not guilty of any criminality whatsoever.” The party leader resigned following the loss of the Scottish independence referendum but represented Gordon in the House of Commons from 2015 to 2017. - wathupondearne Latest news in Yorkshire: Published March 23, 2019 08:47:49 AM A report which has agreed to allocate £250,000 from the Berneslai Homes surplus to support work on an affordable warmth programme for private sector housing over the next three years has been approved. Launching in March, at least 106 households will benefit from the overall programme, giving an average spend per property of £2,358. External funding of around £575,000 is also expected to be brought in, allowing hundreds more households to benefit. All energy efficiency works will be delivered through the existing Better Homes Barnsley framework and the new Warm Homes and Hospital Discharge team will help to assess need and eligibility for these schemes. The Barnsley energy tariff, the local energy supply offer provided by Great North Energy, will also be available to the residents who benefit from this programme, offering further potential for them to save money and be able to heat their homes to a comfortable level. The programme will be fully evaluated so that further funding can be secured to make it sustainable in the long-term. It will rely on referrals from health professionals and front-line council workers, although residents can self-refer. Councillor Roy Miller, Cabinet Spokesperson for Place, said: “There are currently around 11,500 households in fuel poverty in Barnsley and we also have above average rates of excess winter deaths. “This funding will allow the council to take a more holistic approach to tackling cold homes by joining up with other services to provide heating systems and insulation to the most vulnerable residents living in private sector housing.” Paul Hayes, Chair of Berneslai Homes Board, added: “Last year the Berneslai Homes Board agreed to spend some of its company surplus to support projects aimed at economic regeneration and the health and wellbeing of people in Barnsley. This is the first of those projects aimed at reducing fuel poverty. “We want all residents in Barnsley to have a home that is warm and safe to live in.” This news is linked to Town Spirit. We want to work better together. If everyone in Barnsley does just one thing, together we can make our borough a more welcoming place where people want to live, work and visit.
