Barnsley Council is pleased to announce that the borough’s provisional
results in Key Stage 2 reading, writing and maths at the expected standard
are now at the England average and are the highest out of the four South
Yorkshire local authorities.
The provisional results from the Statistical First Release (SFR) for Key
Stage 2 pupils, shows that:
Barnsley has improved in ranking from being 102nd in 2017, up to 72nd
position in 2018 out of 152 local authorities.
Barnsley’s writing and maths provisional results at the expected standard
are now above the England average.
In writing, Barnsley is now ranked 61st this year which is an improvement
from being 86th the year before. This ranking places Barnsley on equal terms
with Rotherham, and now outperforming all other South Yorkshire local
authorities.
In maths, Barnsley’s ranking has improved from 79th to 65th making Barnsley
the best placed South Yorkshire local authority in this subject.
Although the expected standard for reading is still behind the England
average with a -2 percentage point gap, this has improved from a -4
percentage point gap from the previous year. Barnsley is now ranked 104th
in reading which is a better position than any of the other South Yorkshire
local authorities. Despite this, Barnsley remains below the average of our
statistical neighbours.
Councillor Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for People (Achieving
Potential), said: “The provisional Statistical First Release (SFR) is
excellent news for Barnsley, we’ve made considerable progress and it’s great
to see Barnsley leaping up the rankings this year. This is a testament to
the hard work of our children, parents and local schools.
“We continuously work towards improving our standards in education and it’s
fantastic to see that this investment is working so well.
“We strive to be the best we can be; we’ve made improvements in our higher
standard results too which we’re very proud of. We have more to do to
because we are ambitious as a borough, I’m confident that our schools are
improving all the time and that they will deliver even better results next
year.
“Our priority is to support our children to reach their potential and these
provisional results show we are doing this well. Well done to everyone
involved!”
