New Year, New Healthier You

A free local service can help residents achieve their New Year
Resolutions for 2019.

Get Healthy Rotherham, commissioned by Rotherham Council, provides
specialist support in many of the most common resolutions, including
stopping smoking, losing weight, eating more healthily and being more
active. Anyone aged over 18 and who lives in Rotherham can access the
support available (subject to eligibility criteria).

In addition, nearly 80,000 people in Rotherham are eligible to have a
free NHS Health Check with Get Healthy Rotherham – the five yearly
health assessment which can help people take steps to live a healthier
lifestyle. The assessment aims to identify those at risk of serious, but
potentially avoidable conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney
disease, type 2 diabetes and some types of dementia. People aged 40-74
years old and who meet the inclusion criteria are eligible.

Anyone wanting to stop smoking can get support directly from Get Healthy
Rotherham’s programme of support, which includes free expert advice and
stop smoking medications including Nicotine Replacement Therapy. Support
is available either online, via telephone support or face to face at one
of many community venues across Rotherham.

The service is also working in partnership with Slimming World to help
deliver a free 12 week weight management programme for people who wish
to lose weight (subject to eligibility criteria).

Get Healthy Rotherham Service Manager Jacqui Reddick said: “The start of
the New Year is when most people decide to improve their health, and as
we provide weight management support, a specialist stop smoking
programme and general healthy lifestyle support it’s never been a better
time to take advantage of the free support we offer. The NHS Health
Check is also an excellent way of helping people understand how healthy
changes could help reduce their risk of developing a long term health
condition in the future.”

Cllr David Roche, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Adult Care at
Rotherham Council, and Chair of the Rotherham Tobacco Alliance, also
emphasised the importance of the NHS Health Check. He said: “We are
working closely with Get Healthy Rotherham to ensure that everyone who
is eligible is able to access the NHS Health Check, as the assessment
and any subsequent lifestyle changes will have such a positive impact on
their long term health. I encourage anyone who thinks they may qualify
to contact Get Healthy Rotherham – and even people who aren’t eligible
may be able to benefit from one of the free healthy lifestyle
interventions they offer.”
