A 31-year-old man has been sent to prison for eight months after
admitting stealing a motorcycle and perverting the course of justice.

Anthony Ellis, of Birks Avenue, Woodhouse, appeared before Sheffield
Crown Court on Monday 29 October after pleading guilty to theft of motor
vehicle and perverting the course of justice. He was jailed for eight
months.

The court heard how in the evening of 8 August 2017, a distinctive red
and white Yamaha superbike was stolen from the Balmain Road area of
Sheffield. Witnesses reported that the bike had been put inside a white
van and driven off.

Just after midnight on 9 August 2017, officers in a marked car spied the
van on Penistone Road and pursued the vehicle, which failed to stop for
officers. In the Hill Foot Road area, the van slowed and appeared to be
stopping.

A second police car containing two PCs, who had responded to radio calls
to help with the pursuit, went to move in front of the van, at which
point the van accelerated, turning sharply into the police car before
speeding away.

The van was recovered in the Woodside Lane area of Sheffield, parked and
locked. Inside the van was the stolen superbike, on false registration
plates.

As an investigation was launched to identify the owner of the stolen
superbike and who was involved, Ellis called police on 11 August 2017
reporting that the van involved in the theft had been stolen sometime
between 7-11 August 2017.

A search of the van revealed a receipt and documentation for purchases
made at a local business. Checks of their CCTV showed Ellis at the shop
on 8 August 2017.

DC Ryan Griffiths, of Sheffield’s Robbery Unit, said: “Our analysis of
CCTV from the shop where Ellis had been was incredibly revealing – it
showed clearly that Ellis arrived in the white van he said had been
stolen the day before.

“This evidence was coupled with DNA and telephone evidence that placed
Ellis at the site of the motorcycle theft. Our enquiries were able to
prove Ellis had lied to officers, trying to cover his crime by claiming
his van had been stolen after the event. He has since admitted his
crimes before a court and is now in prison.
