Employers from businesses across South Yorkshire were yesterday given
the knowledge of how to spot the signs of modern day slavery and human
trafficking.
During the Modern Slavery Business Awareness Day, organised by the
force’s Anti-Slavery Unit, attendees were provided with information
about ways to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking within
businesses.
Speakers at the event also talked about how to minimise exploitation
within the workforce.
Detective Sergeant Nikki Leach, who heads up the Anti-Slavery Unit,
said: “A key part of our role in the unit is to raise awareness that
modern slavery is still happening today, and educating both the public
and businesses about this.
“Our business awareness day did just that, and through guest speakers we
have hopefully given employers the information they need to spot that
someone might be a victim of modern slavery or human trafficking.
“I’d like to thank the speakers who attended, from the University of
Hull, Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority and the Snowdrop Project,
for joining us and providing such helpful and informative presentations.
“These events are really useful for organisations and employers of all
sizes and we will definitely be looking to hold more in the future.”
Anyone with concerns can call 101 or 999 in an emergency. You can also
speak to the 24/7 Modern Slavery Helpline on 0800 0121700.
