Allen, with Rotherham Council colleagues, student Denver Milnes, and The
Works manager Gareth Masters with one of the new belly bins.

Rotherham Council has installed a set of solar powered litter bins that
can swallow up to eight times more waste than a normal litter bin.

The ‘Bigbelly bins’ are part of an eight-week trial and use the sun’s
energy to compact litter placed inside them to devour more rubbish. Even
in low light, the bin’s internal 12-volt battery is used to power a
hydraulic ram to compact the waste.

The 15 hi-tech bins also use super-smart tracking systems to send a
message to the Council’s street cleansing teams when they are full and
need emptying.

The Bigbellies’ compacting and message systems will allow street
cleansing teams to concentrate on other tasks, as well as reducing the
number of bags used.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner, Greener Communities,
Councillor Sarah Allen, said: “Bigbelly bins are a fantastic invention
that will help us reduce waste at the busiest location in the town,
ensuring we have cleaner public spaces. This is part of our ongoing
improvements to waste services and to encouraging recycling.”

In the town centre, 12 bins are located at Corporation Street, Riverside
Precinct, Minster Gardens, Upper Millgate, Bridgegate, All Saints
Square, and Effingham Street. There is also a further three bins outside
Rotherham Town Hall, Rotherham Road at Parkgate and Wath Recreation
Ground.

Student Denver Milnes, who currently attends Thomas Rotherham College
and regularly visits the town centre said: “I love them! They’re so
bright and they’re generating a lot of interest around town!”

Manager of The Works Gareth Masters added: “Rotherham is a lovely town
centre and it’s great to see it being looked after in this way.”
