The hydrotherapy pool build is under way with Councillor Gordon Watson
and Newman School Head Teacher Paul Sylvester
A £1m hydrotherapy pool is set to be opened later this year at one of
Rotherham’s special schools.
Building work is well under way for the Department for Education funded
new swimming pool which is being built at Newman school in Whiston.
The new pool, which is set to be officially opened in the summer time,
replaces a 40 year old structure after it was deemed beyond repair.
Deputy Leader Councillor Gordon Watson, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet
Member for Children and Young People’s services said: “It is great to
see this structure going in. It is our intention to give every child the
best start in life and it is well documented that a hydrotherapy pool
like this can make a big difference for children with special needs. I
look forward to coming back and visiting the school when this is
completed.”
Head teacher Paul Silvester added: “Our pupils often have difficulty in
accessing other pools which can struggle to meet their needs with
appropriate facilities for hoists and lifts in a busy environment. The
new hydrotherapy pool will enable children daily access so we can meet
their physical and mental health needs as well.”
The pool comes less than a year after the school benefited from the
heroic efforts of Rotherham marathon man Ray Matthews, who ran 75
marathons in 75 days aged 75 in order to fund raise for Newman.
His fund raising efforts enabled pupils to be able to fully use the
grounds following the installation of an accessible path. This all came
in the schools 70th celebration year since opening in 1948.
“These investments in the fabric of the school shows we will be
continuing to meet children with special educational needs in Rotherham
and their families hopefully for another 70 years,” added Mr Silvester.
“Newman is all about making a splash, and with the new hydrotherapy pool
we can do that in style!”
