A 36-year-old man has been charged in connection to two robberies at a
post office in the Catcliffe area of Rotherham.

At around 4.45pm on Tuesday 16 October, it was reported that a man
entered the store on Brinsworth Road, and stole a quantity of cash from
the till and some cigarettes. The man also made threats to staff with a
broken bottle, but no one was injured.

The following evening (Wednesday 17 October), at around 6.15pm, police
received a report that a man had entered the store on Brinsworth Road
and forced the shop assistant behind the counter, making demands for
cash and cigarettes.

The shop owner then entered the store and was in the process of
detaining the offender, who is said to have picked up a bottle and hit
the owner with it, causing a cut to his head.

Thomas Whaley, of no-fixed-address, has since been charged with two
counts of robbery, section 18 wounding, threatening with an offensive
weapon and possession of a knife/bladed object.

He has been remanded in to custody to appear before Sheffield
Magistrate’s Court this morning (Friday 19 October).
