For individual choice, here are details of some Halal codes for products
on sale that many people are not aware of. You might be surprised to
learn of retail outlets in your community selling Halal meats.
There needs to be more transparency for food items, especially if it is
your preference to avoid them for personal reasons.
So what exactly is halal? How does it differ from other food?
Halal means ‘permissible’ in Arabic and describes anything that’s
allowed under Islamic law.
Although it is most often used to describe food and drink, halal can
refer to any object or activity. Anything NOT allowed is referred to as
haram.
Halal meat comes from an animal that has been killed using a method of
slaughter called dhabihah.
It must have been slaughtered by a Muslim who invokes the name of Allah
and then immediately cuts the animal’s throat with a very sharp knife so
that it dies instantly.
After the throat has been cut, blood is allowed to drain from the
animal.
Animals can be stunned first as long as that does not cause instant
death before the knife has been used.
In the case of poultry, the British Halal Food Authority allows
water-bath stunning where chickens are put in water which is then
electrified with the aim of paralysing them prior to slaughter.
However, there are objections to this method by campaigners who say the
birds are paralysed but not stunned.
Muslim abattoirs in the UK are exempt, on religious grounds, from laws
that require ALL animals to be stunned before they are killed.
Some animal welfare groups have called for an end to these exceptions.
The debate came to a head again in 2015, following an investigation into
alleged animal cruelty at a halal abattoir in Yorkshire. Four people had
their licences suspended by the Food Standards Agency and one person was
sacked.
