Officers from our Operational Support Unit have this week relaunched the
force’s Community Speed Watch Scheme in response to community concerns
about road safety.
The scheme is a locally driven initiative where members of the public,
with the support of South Yorkshire Police, help to monitor speeds of
vehicles in their towns and villages.
Inspector Craig Clifton said it is an important scheme that can make a
big difference: “We are working with a range of volunteers to tackle
what is a pressing issue for many people living in South Yorkshire.
“Community Speed Watch volunteers, working alongside our officers, will
use speed detection devices to spot cars or other vehicles exceeding the
speed limit. Those identified to be doing this will then be referred to
us, and then we’ll be in touch with drivers to advise them to slow down
in future.
“This isn’t about issuing tickets, it’s about us talking to drivers
about how certain behaviour can impact on people’s lives, it’s something
we’re relaunched after feedback from communities in different parts of
the force area.”
These volunteers will work with our Neighbourhood Policing Teams to help
contribute to the force’s aims of improving the quality of life for
communities and reducing speeding on South Yorkshire’s roads.
Areas, or stretches of road which are a particular concern will also be
identified by the volunteers and contribute to a countywide strategy for
the scheme.
Inspector Clifton says the approach has worked in the past, but needed a
reboot: “We have used this scheme with great success before, but it
needed some changes to make it work today. As part of that we’ve
recruited a dedicated co-ordinator for the initiative who will work with
staff and volunteers to create local programs.
“Volunteers will be given full training and supported throughout their
involvement with Community Speedwatch. If you’re interested in getting

many people on board as possible.”
